E-ink displays are best known from e-readers, but their unusual strengths are attracting new uses. They consume little power, remain visible in bright light and can display an image without constant refresh.

A Different Kind of Screen

Unlike conventional displays, e-ink does not emit bright light directly. This makes it comfortable for long reading sessions and useful in sunlight.

Refresh rates remain slower, so e-ink is poorly suited to video or fast animation. Its value lies in information that changes occasionally.

New Applications

Retail price tags, transit signs, office nameplates and digital notebooks can all benefit from low energy use.

A sign may operate for months on a small battery, while a notebook can provide handwriting features without the distractions of a tablet.

The E Ink Corporation explains the underlying technology at https://www.eink.com/tech/detail/How_it_works.

Sustainability Questions

Long battery life reduces charging, but electronic products still require materials, manufacturing and eventual disposal.

Durability and repairability determine whether an e-ink device offers a meaningful environmental advantage.

Conclusion

E-ink is not competing to become the fastest or brightest display. It succeeds by doing less: showing stable information clearly with very little power. That makes it useful wherever calm, persistent screens are more valuable than motion.
