A digital twin is a virtual representation of a physical object, process or system. The idea began in engineering and manufacturing, but it is now being applied to buildings, transportation networks, health care and energy infrastructure.

More Than a 3D Model

A digital twin is useful because it changes as the real system changes. Sensors may provide information about temperature, vibration, movement or performance. Software then uses that data to simulate conditions and test possible decisions.

A building operator might predict energy demand, while a transit agency could model the effect of a service disruption.

The Value of Safe Experimentation

Real-world testing can be expensive or dangerous. A digital twin allows teams to explore scenarios before making physical changes.

Limits and Risks

A twin is only as reliable as its data and assumptions. Missing sensors, outdated models or biased inputs can create false confidence.
