The ocean is not silent. Waves, rain, ice, earthquakes and animals create a complex acoustic environment. Human activity has added powerful new sources, including commercial shipping, offshore construction, seismic surveys and sonar.

For marine animals that depend on sound, this is not merely background disturbance. It can change how they find food, avoid predators and locate mates.

Sound Travels Far Underwater

Water carries sound efficiently. Low-frequency noise can travel over long distances, especially in deep channels.

Large ships generate continuous low-frequency sound through engines and propellers. As global shipping has expanded, many marine environments have become noisier.

Whales and Communication

Propeller design, hull maintenance and slower speeds can reduce underwater noise. These changes may also improve fuel efficiency.

Climate Change Complicates the Picture

Changes in ice cover, storms and ocean chemistry may alter natural sound transmission. New shipping routes in previously ice-covered regions could introduce noise into sensitive habitats.

These shifts make baseline monitoring urgent.

The Challenge of Attribution

Animals face many pressures at once, including warming, pollution, prey changes and vessel strikes. Isolating the effect of noise is difficult.

Controlled studies, tagging and long-term listening networks help scientists connect exposure to behavior.

Ocean noise is a form of habitat alteration. It changes the sensory environment on which many marine species depend. Quieter technology, smarter routing and stronger monitoring can reduce the burden without requiring the ocean to become silent.
